Behind the Word: Sankalpa

If you have been to a yoga class, you may have heard the teacher invite you to set a sankalpa. For many, it sounds mysterious or even intimidating. But the meaning is much simpler and more human than it seems.

The Sanskrit word sankalpa combines san (a connection with the highest truth) and kalpa (a vow or intention). It is not about a goal to achieve, but a heartfelt statement of how you want to live and feel. Think of it as planting a seed in your mind, guiding your actions with clarity.

Your sankalpa should not be a demand or pressure. Beginners often feel lost because they expect a perfect sentence or something life-changing. In truth, it can be simple. “I am present.” “I choose kindness.” “I move with patience.” These quiet affirmations are enough to shift your energy. In yoga philosophy, sankalpa connects us to svadharma, our own path, and resonates with the yogic understanding of sunyata, the openness of mind. It invites us to align with what feels true in the present moment, rather than striving toward something fixed.

During practice, repeat your sankalpa at the beginning, and return to it whenever your mind drifts. Over time, this gentle repetition creates new patterns in the way you think and respond. Beyond the mat, sankalpa can support daily routines. You might carry it into a walk, a meal, or even a moment of stillness before bed.

If you feel ready to take the next step beyond the mat, my ebook Your Journey Within – A Guided Workbook for Intentions & Growth offers structured steps to explore intention, self-awareness and gratitude at your own pace. It guides you through identifying strengths, aligning intentions with values, cultivating inner calm and mindfulness, and building a self-care routine that truly fits you.
